Taser - a stun gun which provides a possibility of striking from a distance. In Poland it is possible legally to use tasers and they are also on the equipment of our police. It is worthwhile to know what they are, how they work, and dispel the myths associated with them.

The principle of tasers operation is very simple. From the device two electrodes are launched by using compressed air, which are connected with the handgun by wire. After hitting, taser disables the person with high electric voltage of low current, 50 000 volts at 1.3 mA. This causes neuromuscular immobilization. The person after striking is not able to escape or resist.

There is a lot of controversy with regard to tasers. The police sometimes abuse tasers due to their little harmfulness, but needles of electrodes that stick in the body, can hit the eye or larynx. However, it is necessary to note that compared with other coercive measures, tasers are the safest and humane ways to overpower the person.

Advanced Shaped Pulse Technology enables to achieve the effect of temporary disruption of the central nervous system and to take control over the movement of overpowered person (EMD = Electro-Muscular Disruption). The EMD technology overpowers even the biggest ?tough guys?, without causing them greater damage and not causing lasting repercussions on living conditions. TASER enables to stop the threat from a safe distance, as well as taser can be used as a contact weapon.

Results of applying tasers by Police clearly indicate that this is a weapon with the smallest index of causing injuries from all direct coercive measures available today. TASER is the only not-killing weapon, which is able effectively to overpower assailants under the influence of drugs, alcohol or persons with emotional disorders.

Contrary to conventional weapons, striking with TASER is effective in any body part. Effective use of firearms requires accurate shooting in internal organs responsible for life functions, what of course increases the risk of loss of the life or health. Similarly chemical and pepper gasses must hit directly the face of assailant.

Legal grounds: Article 4.1.4.c of the Act of 21 May 1999 on arms and ammunition classifies TASER as o weapon object intended to overpower persons with electricity. According to the provisions of Article 11.7 of this Act, firearms license is not require in case of objects intended to overpower persons using electricity at the average value of current not exceeding 10 mA. The average value of the current in TASER is up to 2.1 mA, which exempts the user from the obligation to apply for permit to carry this weapon. The owner of this weapon is fully and solely responsible for consequences of its use, as well as results of negligence and omissions related to the possession and storage.
