United States Navy SEALs accepted this handgun in the competition for official US Army handgun. Platinum Elite version was produced

only to the U.S. market and only in limited number of copies  in order to increase its uniqueness and price. SIG-Sauer appeared in 1981 in relation to participation of SIG Sauer Company in the competition for new official United States Army handgun. This is an elaborated version of earlier handgun SIG-Sauer P220, differing from its predecessor above all by extended magazine on 15 cartridges. SIG Sauer P226 gained outstanding opinions amongst users, and it is used by a lot of police units in the entire world.
